Anyone who regularly jogs through the countryside--or perhaps bicycles a few miles as I often do--knows the spot. It's that particular place where you can look back on the path you've taken, note the landmarks passed along the way, and survey the road ahead. In that momentary pause, you know that steady strides have brought you thus far and will propel you still farther.

As an institution of higher learning, the daily enterprise of educating nearly 41,000 students and conducting important research and outreach doesn't afford us much luxury for looking back. But, given my recently announced plans to retire as president of the University of South Carolina on July 31, this seems to be an auspicious time to reflect on this institution's progress in the past several years.

We have passed important milestones such as:

  • achieving the Carnegie Institution's highest designation as a research university

  • attracting freshman classes whose average SAT score has climbed 76 points in six years, and

  • recruiting hundreds of new faculty with impressive credentials in teaching and scholarly achievement.

Our international business program has continued to earn consecutive No. 1 rankings in U.S. News & World Report. And a clear signal of our momentum is that we have also enjoyed strong support in private giving with robust gains in overall gifts and number of donors. In the first half of fiscal year 2008, private giving increased 58 percent over the same period last year.

In nearly every measure, from a 70 percent increase in research funding during the past five years to rising student retention rates, South Carolina is proving itself to be a leader among national universities.

In the pages that follow, allow me to share with you some of South Carolina's success stories. I think you'll agree that this University has made impressive gains on its road to greatness--a greatness defined not only by academic achievement but also by the real difference the University makes in the lives of our students and society.
